LOST WAX METHOD

terrysigningwaxes.jpg (21967 bytes)

Hot cast or casting is an ancient process dating back thousands of years. It is demanding and expensive process. The lost wax technique is divided into four stages

Artisan creates the wax model or sculpture. The wax model is an exact replica of what the finished bronze piece will look like.

Forming the mold around the wax model. In this stage the wax model is encased in liquid rubber. This solution has a fine consistency which allows it to pick up the finer features of the wax model. This process is repeated twice.

Once the paste is dried, holes are made at the bottom of the mold which allows thin rods of wax to be attached to the wax base of the figurine.

Then a third and a final coating are drawn applied to increase the thickness of the mold. In this stage the wax is melted away. The mold is removed from the fire and the molten metal is poured into the mold. After the casting has cooled several hours, the mold is carefully removed.

Finishing the piece. The patina is applied, the highlights are ground out with a wire brush on a drill and then the piece is polished.
